Burundi edge Greece 1-0 in All Nations Cup opener

Team Greece kicked off their 2025 All Nations Cup campaign with a disappointing 1 nil loss to Burundi. 

With scores tied at nil nil at the main interval, Burundi scored early in the second half to take the lead from a sensational 30 meters shot that was unstoppable. 

Team Greece then took total control of the game and completely dominated possession, but unfortunately were not able to score after numerous clear-cut opportunities went begging. 

Michael Karamitos, Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) Board Member, said, “Disappointing way to end the first game with a loss however, very proud of the way the boys took total control once headed and look forward to bouncing back with a win next week against Serbia.”

Bill Papastergiadis, GCM President, was encouraged by the performance despite the loss.

“Team Greece may not have gotten the result we so desired however, the effort and determination cannot be questioned,” Papastergiadis said.

“We totally controlled the second half and created numerous opportunities however, it wasn’t meant to be. We now look forward to our next opponent Serbia, next Sunday in a must win match.”

Fire destroys Leon Leondiou’s multimillion-dollar Henley Beach Airbnb

A devastating fire has destroyed a multimillion-dollar Airbnb on the Henley Beach esplanade, leaving owner Leon Leondiou and his family heartbroken.

Emergency services rushed to the scene just before 1pm on Sunday, as flames tore through the two-storey property south of Henley Square, sending thick black smoke across the beachside suburb.

Leondiou was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation after reportedly running back inside with a fire extinguisher in a desperate attempt to save his home. He told 7News he had been placing cardboard boxes into his fireplace when he heard a sudden explosion.

Around a dozen firefighters battled the blaze for four hours before bringing it under control. The MFS said the rear of the building was “at the point of collapsing,” but crews managed to protect neighbouring properties.

Several residents and two police officers were also treated for smoke inhalation. Seaview Road was closed as emergency services monitor flare-ups and assess the extensive damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Longtime vendor Panayiotis Kouros awaits opening of new Sydney Fish Market

Panayiotis Kouros says he’s eagerly awaiting the move to the new $700 million Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay.

Kouros, whose family has been at the Pyrmont fish markets for over three decades and operate Boat Shed, Fish Market Café and Squid Ink, said the opening of the new venue couldn’t come soon enough.

“It’s very exciting, we’re all looking forward to it,” he told ABC News.

The NSW government confirmed construction on the long-awaited development is set to finish next month, but customers won’t be welcomed at the new facility until January 19 next year.

Kouros said his team was ready to move in as soon as the doors open.

The new markets will trade until 10pm, compared to the old 4pm close, something Kouros believes will boost business.

“It’ll be harder but it’ll be better for us… we’re never not busy,” he said.

The upgraded fish market is expected to attract over six million visitors annually once it opens.

Heidelberg United edge out Marconi Stallions in tight Australian Championship opener

Heidelberg United began their 2025 Australian Championship campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Marconi Stallions on Sunday, October 12.

After a goalless opening half, Anthony Theodoropoulos broke the deadlock in the 57th minute, finishing confidently into the left corner after Anthony Lesiotis created space down the right wing.

Marconi pressed for an equaliser, with Jordan Swibel missing a key headed chance late in the game, but the Stallions couldn’t find a breakthrough.

The result gave Heidelberg United, also known as the Bergers, a strong start to their Championship campaign, claiming all three points in their opening match.

Loverdos reconnects Greece with its diaspora during historic visit to New Zealand

Greece’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Greeks Abroad, Ioannis Loverdos, has completed an official visit to New Zealand – the first by a Greek government representative in 18 years – reaffirming Athens’ commitment to supporting the vibrant Hellenic community living there.

Loverdos’ visit, held from 10 to 12 October, included stops in Wellington and Auckland, where he met with community leaders, religious representatives, and New Zealand officials.

He was accompanied by Greece’s Ambassador to Australia, Stavros Venizelos; the Honorary Consul of Greece in New Zealand, George Neonakis; the Secretaries-General of the Ministry of the Interior, Athanasios Balermpas and Dimitrios Karnavos; and the Head of the Directorate-General for Citizenship, Katerina Ouli.

Meetings in Wellington

In Wellington, Loverdos was warmly received by His Eminence Metropolitan Myron of New Zealand and Exarch of Oceania, as well as members of the Greek Orthodox Community of Wellington Inc.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Minister praised the “small but vibrant” Greek community for maintaining its identity and traditions despite the distance from the homeland.

“Although residing so far away from Greece, you have achieved to keep our culture alive. Greece will do everything in its power to continue supporting you,” Loverdos assured attendees.

The visit concluded with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Greek–New Zealand Memorial, honouring the ANZAC soldiers who fought and fell in Greece during the Second World War. The memorial stands as a lasting symbol of friendship and shared sacrifice between the two nations, commemorating both the New Zealanders who defended Greece and the Greeks who aided them during and after the Battle of Crete.

Official talks and community engagement in Auckland

In Auckland, Loverdos met with the Hon Paul Goldsmith, New Zealand’s Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Minister for Justice, Minister for Media and Communications, and Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations.

The two politicians highlighted the longstanding bilateral relations between Greece and New Zealand, as well as the vital role of the Greek diaspora as a bridge between the two countries.

Earlier in the day, Loverdos attended a service at the Holy Trinity Christian Greek Orthodox Church of Auckland, where he spoke with parishioners and community members, assuring them of Greece’s continued support in preserving their language, faith, and cultural heritage.

A historic visit after 18 years

This marked the first visit to New Zealand by a Greek government representative since then–Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis travelled there in May 2007.

Loverdos’ presence symbolised a renewed effort to strengthen Greece’s relationship with its diaspora and reaffirm the shared cultural and historical bonds between Greece and New Zealand.

Haftu Strintzos claims Melbourne Half Marathon

Long-distance runner Haftu Strintzos has claimed victory in this year’s Melbourne Half Marathon, a year after finishing runner-up.

“I feel much better than I felt last year,” the 26-year-old told The Sydney Morning Herald. “Time-wise it’s about the same but that was my debut here.”

A former 5km and 10km track runner, Strintzos said the switch to road racing had been a challenging adjustment.

“I just played to my strengths. I always knew I was a bit better at the longer distances,” he said.

Strintzos completed the race in 1:02:31, with his favourite stretch being Albert Park, where he has competed since childhood.

The win follows his 14th-place finish in the Sydney Marathon in August, marking his debut over the full marathon distance.

Late Pontian Eagles President Terry Kalaitsidis remembered as a pillar of SA football

The South Australian community is mourning the loss of Terry Kalaitsidis, the long-serving Pontian Eagles football president, who died on October 5 at the age of 61.

Known as one of the “good guys” of the game, Kalaitsidis was remembered as a passionate leader whose vision and community spirit shaped local football for decades.

Under his presidency, the Pontian Eagles rose from the SAASL amateur leagues to claim their first State League 2 premiership last season and earn promotion to State League 1.

“His ambitious vision to take the Pontians to the next level was realised under his presidentship,” West Adelaide Soccer Club wrote in tribute, describing him as “a great, loving, and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend.”

Beyond his own club, Kalaitsidis spent nearly a decade volunteering with West Adelaide Hellas, coaching and managing junior teams and helping at community events like Glendi.

The Pontian Brotherhood of SA called him “the proud driving force” behind the Eagles, while Adelaide Olympic described him as “kind, genuine and always a pleasure to be around.”

His mantra “Respect all, fear none” became a cornerstone of the Pontian Eagles’ culture and a reflection of his enduring influence.

A funeral service for Kalaitsidis will be held at St Dimitrios Greek Orthodox Church in Salisbury Plain on Wednesday, October 15, at 10.30am.

Athens marks 81 years since liberation from German occupation

Greece commemorated the 81st anniversary of Athens’ liberation from German occupation with a ceremony held on the Acropolis, attended by President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine Tassoulas.

Six members of the Lykeion ton Ellinidon dance group, dressed in traditional costumes, carried the Liberation Flag alongside students from the Ionian School before handing it to the Presidential Guard, who hoisted it as the Air Force band performed the national anthem.

The government was represented by Deputy Interior Minister Vassilis Spanakis, joined by political, military, and church leaders.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas paid tribute to the city’s liberation, saying, “Today, we honour those who fought for democracy.”

He recalled that 81 years ago, the swastika was removed from the Acropolis and replaced by the Greek flag, a symbol of hope and resistance, adding that its message endures: “We must defend democracy and turn the patriotism of the Resistance into social responsibility.”

Michael Tenezos, a 27-year-old Greek national known to Swedish authorities as “Greken” (The Greek), has been arrested in Mexico following a Europol-led international operation.

Born in Stockholm to Greek immigrant parents from Pistiána, Arta, Tenezos once dreamed of becoming a professional figure skater before rising to become one of Sweden’s most dangerous criminals.

Authorities identify him as a senior member of the Dalen gang, a splinter faction of the notorious Foxtrot organisation led by Rawa Majid, the so-called “Kurdish Fox.”

The violent feud between the rival gangs has turned Stockholm into a war zone, with over 60 deaths in shootings and bombings within a single year.

His relatives in Arta expressed disbelief at his transformation. “No one could believe it. He was just a normal kid,” said Giorgos Tenezos, 72, a distant relative.

The arrest marks a significant development in Europol’s crackdown on transnational gang violence, which has increasingly drawn international attention to Sweden’s spiralling crime crisis.

Trump invites Greece and Cyprus to join Gaza peace summit in Egypt

US President Donald Trump has invited Greece and Cyprus to participate in a high-level Gaza peace summit to be held on Monday, October 13, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The invitations were extended directly to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.

The summit follows a historic ceasefire agreement and comes amid mounting global concern over the humanitarian crisis and continuing unrest in Gaza.

The meeting will be co-chaired by President Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres confirmed his attendance, alongside world leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Israel has not yet confirmed participation, while Iran has also been invited.

According to Axios, the US State Department has expanded the list of invitees to include Spain, Japan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Hungary, India, El Salvador, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Canada.

The US-led initiative seeks to bring together a broad coalition to discuss de-escalation, humanitarian aid coordination, and renewed diplomatic efforts toward stability in Gaza.

For Greece and Cyprus, participation underscores their increasing strategic influence in Eastern Mediterranean diplomacy, a region defined by complex energy and security dynamics.
