Anthony Albanese sworn in as Australia’s 31st Prime Minister

·

Anthony Albanese has been sworn in as the 31st Prime Minister of Australia at Government House in Canberra this morning.

During the ceremony, Mr Albanese also announced his top posts in an interim ministry. They are:

– Richard Marles MP as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Employment.

Jim Chalmers as Federal Treasurer.

Katy Gallagher as Minister for Finance, Minister for Women and Attorney General.

Penny Wong as Foreign Minister.

The urgent appointments clear the way for Albanese to form government while Labor gains confidence it can govern with a workable majority, despite historic gains for independent candidates and the Greens in Saturday’s election results.

Albanese declared his ambition to change the way politics is conducted in Australia after a savage swing against the Coalition in Saturday’s election, driving Scott Morrison out of power and elevating independent women as new powerbrokers in Parliament.
