Kourabiethes with love: Greek elders give back to the homeless in Sydney

·

Elderly residents at St Basil’s aged care home in Kogarah have prepared and packed traditional kourabiethes — Greek almond shortbread biscuits — for those in need.

The sweet parcels were later distributed by St Elesa Food Initiative volunteers to homeless people at Woolloomooloo and Martin Place, bringing smiles and heartfelt thanks from those who received them.

The St Elesa Food Initiative is run by the Greek Orthodox Parish and Community of Kogarah.

Preparing kourabiethes has become a beloved tradition at the aged care home, offering elderly residents a chance to connect with the wider community through simple but meaningful acts.

In a post on Facebook, the Greek Orthodox Parish and Community of Kogarah wrote, “These small gestures carry big meaning—not just for those who receive them, but also for the residents, who take great joy and pride in being able to give back to the community.”

More than just a charitable act, the ongoing effort brings joy, purpose, and a sense of fulfilment to the elderly participants—proving that kindness knows no age.
