Former Melbourne Victory striker Nikos Vergos is reportedly set to join Newcastle Jets as the club continues a major squad rebuild ahead of next season.
The 30-year-old Greek forward became a free agent after Melbourne Victory confirmed last week that he would not be offered a new contract. Vergos scored 17 goals in 60 appearances across all competitions during his two seasons with the club.
Newcastle are preparing for a busy campaign that will include both A-League and AFC Champions League Elite commitments, with coach Mark Milligan facing the challenge of replacing a significant number of departing players.
Among those leaving the Jets are striker Lachlan Rose, who is bound for Dundee United F.C., along with Ben Gibson, Clayton Taylor, Kota Mizunuma, Lachlan Bayliss, Mark Natta, Lucas Scicluna and Noah James.
Reports have also linked Bayliss with a move to Auckland FC, while Natta is believed to be close to joining Italian second division side Cesena FC. Scicluna is reportedly headed to Perth Glory FC.
Meanwhile, despite still being contracted for another season, Newcastle winger Eli Adams is also expected to depart the club amid reported interest from several overseas teams.
Clubs believed to be monitoring Adams include Red Bull Salzburg, Derby County F.C., F.C. Copenhagen, K.A.A. Gent, 1. FC Nürnberg, Holstein Kiel and Gamba Osaka.
