Dimitris Basis receives federal recognition for mentoring young Australian musicians

·

Renowned international vocalist Dimitris Basis has received formal federal recognition for his outstanding community service and dedication to nurturing the next generation of Australian musical talent.

The Honourable Tony Burke MP, Federal Member for Watson, Minister for Home Affairs, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Minister for Cyber Security, and Minister for the Arts, has formally presented Basis with a Certificate of Appreciation.

This high-level federal acknowledgement serves as one more significant recognition for the artist, specifically honouring his continuous, impactful mentorship of students at the prestigious Newtown High School of the Performing Arts (NHSPA) since 2019.

The federal acknowledgment arrives on the heels of “The Final Encore,” a spectacular, completely sold-out farewell concert series held on 29 and 30 April 2026. Staged at the school’s beautiful St George’s Hall, these final performances marked the fourth grand collaboration between the artist, the student orchestra, and the school choir.

Dimitris Basis

This extraordinary journey was built on the close professional relationship and friendship between Basis and Emlyn Lewis-Jones, NHSPA’s long-serving Music Teacher and Music Director. Since Basis’s first visit to the school in 2018, where he was deeply moved by the exceptional calibre of the student musicians, the pair have worked hand-in-hand. This collaboration grew into an enduring, eight-year cultural partnership that bridged generational gaps and enriched Sydney’s cultural landscape through four landmark productions:

  • 2019: Byzantium to Zorba (Debut concert bridging cultural age gaps)
  • 2021: 200 Years: A Celebration of Greek Music (Marking the Bicentenary of the Greek War of Independence)
  • 2024: Music from the Heart
  • 2026: The Final Encore (The definitive farewell showcase)

Across these historic productions, Basis volunteered his time to guide young musicians through complex, multi-genre repertoires. The final 2026 program beautifully illustrated this depth, crossing genres from heroic folk pieces celebrating the “Fight for Freedom” to urban classics like Cloudy Sunday and Roza, traditional Rebetika (“Greek Blues”), and global cross-cultural echoes like The Beatles’ rendition of Mikis Theodorakis’ The Honeymoon Song.

This official recognition by Minister Burke highlights the profound, lasting impact that international creative professionals bring to the Australian cultural and educational landscapes when engaging deeply with local youth on a community-focused level.

Basis said that “receiving this recognition from Minister Tony Burke is a deep honour, but the true reward has been the journey itself.”

“Working alongside the exceptionally talented students of Newtown High School of the Performing Arts since 2018 has been one of the most fulfilling chapters of my career,” Basis added.

“Watching these young Australian musicians embrace Greek musical traditions with such passion, skill, and respect has been deeply moving. While ‘The Final Encore’ marks the conclusion of this beautiful eight-year partnership, the bond we shared and the music we made together will stay with me forever.”
