Sam Konstas returns to Test side as Australia shakes up top order

·

Rising star Sam Konstas has earned a recall to Australia’s Test side for the opening match against the West Indies, as selectors make bold changes to the top order with Marnus Labuschagne axed after 53 consecutive Tests.

Konstas, who last played in the New Year’s Test against India in January, returns alongside wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis, with both set to bolster the line-up in the absence of the injured Steve Smith. While selectors haven’t finalised the batting order, Konstas is expected to open.

Australian selection chair George Bailey confirmed the move, stating: “We have made the decision to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus. We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling Test careers.”

Labuschagne, once the world’s top-ranked Test batter, has struggled for form over the past two years, averaging under 30 and registering just one century.

Bailey acknowledged the decision was performance-based: “Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn’t been at the level we, or he, expects.”

Konstas’ return signals faith in the 22-year-old’s long-term potential, with Australia looking to rebuild a dynamic top order as the Test summer begins in Bridgetown next Thursday (AEST).
