Mattheou family escapes unharmed after car smashes into SA home

·

The Mattheou family say they are lucky to be alive after a car ploughed into their Clearview home on Hampstead Road in the early hours of Sunday morning, September 28.

Just before 3am, a black sedan clipped another vehicle before crashing into the front of the house and rolling onto its roof, rupturing the property’s gas main and forcing residents to evacuate.

Stavros Mattheou, who lives at the house with his parents and brother, said the family was in shock but grateful no one was hurt.

“If he was there, he would have been killed,” Mr Mattheou said of his brother, who normally steps outside for a smoke around the time of the crash. “When the car hit the fence, whatever hit the roof and the window would have hit him if it went through.”

Mr Mattheou described the aftermath as looking “like a war zone” and “like a bomb has hit the side of the house.” He said their fence, window, roller shutters and gas main were all damaged, leaving the family without gas or hot water.

Despite the extensive damage, the family plan to stay in the home. “We’re just worried about what’s going to happen tonight, when the house is all open,” Mr Mattheou said.

The 32-year-old Stepney woman driving the car was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while SES crews reinforced the property to allow the family to return.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
