Greece to lodge complaint with Ukraine over explosive sea drone discovery

·

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis has informed the European Union’s top diplomat of Greece’s concerns after an explosive-filled sea drone was discovered washed ashore on the Ionian island of Lefkada earlier this month.

According to officials, Athens is preparing to lodge a formal diplomatic complaint with Ukraine over the incident, which Greek authorities believe may be linked to maritime drone operations targeting vessels associated with Russia’s oil transport network.

The uncrewed sea drone was reportedly found by local fishermen on May 7 before being handed over to the Greek military for examination.

During an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Limassol, Cyprus, Gerapetritis briefed EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on the findings of the Greek military investigation.

He also raised the matter directly with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

Greek officials have requested explanations from Kyiv regarding the presence of the drone in Greek waters.
