Addison Demetriou has been stood down by the Newtown Jets amid serious domestic violence allegations, including choking charges.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the 29-year-old was considered a promising young prospect for the National Rugby League and was once described as “one of the most exciting young players” at the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. He was also part of the National Youth Cup team of the decade.

Today, Demetriou is behind bars on remand over allegations he assaulted his partner. His case was heard before Deputy Chief Magistrate Sharon Freund at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday.

Demetriou did not appear at the hearing but pleaded not guilty to intentionally choking a person without consent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault, two counts of stalking or intimidation, and contravening an AVO.

In a statement, the Jets said Demetriou was “immediately stood down” from the club in lieu of the “serious” criminal charges laid against him, “pending determination” of the matter.

The matter will return for a hearing in December this year.
