More than dentures: How Bill Dimitriou is helping patients smile again

·

Many Australians live with loose, uncomfortable or poorly fitting dentures for years, avoiding favourite foods, hiding their smile and accepting discomfort as an unavoidable part of ageing.

According to Sydney dental prosthetist Bill Dimitriou, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Through Halcyon Denture Care, Mr Dimitriou and his team help patients restore not only their ability to eat and speak comfortably, but also their confidence, independence and quality of life.

“Repeatedly we see patients who have become accustomed to inferior quality dentures and simply accept that as normal,” Mr Dimitriou says.

“When you get it right, the difference is immediate. People can eat properly again, smile with confidence and enjoy everyday life without constantly thinking about their dentures.”

Today, Halcyon Denture Care operates clinics in Petersham, Sydney CBD and St Marys, providing full dentures, partial dentures, implant-retained dentures, repairs, relines and soft liners to patients across Sydney. The group also accepts all major health funds, DVA referrals and hospital vouchers, helping make treatment accessible to a broad range of patients.

Behind each clinic sits the group’s own in-house laboratory, allowing the team to maintain quality control throughout the entire treatment process. Yet the business began in far humbler circumstances.

From Corporate Life to Clinical Care

Mr Dimitriou’s journey to becoming one of Sydney’s leading dental prosthetists was anything but conventional. After completing qualifications in dental technology and earning a Bachelor of Science in Anatomy and Histology from the University of Sydney, he spent years working in medical device sales and investor relations for a NASDAQ-listed biotechnology company.

While the corporate world provided valuable experience, he found himself wanting something more tangible.

“I wanted to work with my hands and have a clear line of sight in helping people,” he says.

That decision led him back into study at Sydney Dental Hospital while simultaneously establishing a small dental laboratory from a spare room in his father’s dental surgery in Harris Park.

“I would work during the day and then spend evenings and nights building the laboratory. It was a small room with no windows, but it was where the vision for the business began,” he says.

Following his qualification as a Dental Prosthetist, he opened the first Halcyon Denture Care clinic in Petersham and expanded the laboratory operation under the X Dental Lab banner. Additional clinics in St Marys and Sydney CBD soon followed.

A service built around community

For Mr Dimitriou, one of the most rewarding aspects of his work is helping people who may have delayed treatment for years. The son of a dentist and practice manager, he grew up surrounded by healthcare and understands the importance of trust between clinician and patient.

As a Greek Australian, he also understands the value of being able to communicate in a patient’s native language.

“Many older Greek Australians sacrificed so much to build a better future for their families,” he says.

“They deserve to be cared for with dignity, respect and understanding. Being able to explain treatment options in Greek often gives patients confidence and comfort that they might not otherwise have.”

Mr Dimitriou personally conducts consultations in both English and Greek, while other members of the Halcyon team provide services in Italian and Korean, helping patients navigate treatment in the language they feel most comfortable speaking.

Why patients are seeking help

One of the most common issues encountered is patients living with dentures that no longer fit properly. Over time, changes in the mouth and jaw structure can affect how dentures sit, often resulting in discomfort, difficulty eating and reduced confidence.

“Many patients stop eating certain foods, avoid social situations or simply put up with discomfort because they think there’s no alternative,” he explains.

“The reality is that modern denture solutions can make an enormous difference to a person’s quality of life.”

For patients transitioning to dentures for the first time, the process can feel overwhelming. Mr Dimitriou encourages anyone considering treatment to seek advice early.

“Delaying treatment almost always makes things more difficult. The earlier we can assess the situation and explain the available options, the better the outcome tends to be,” he says.

Combining craftsmanship and technology

A key point of difference for Halcyon Denture Care is its fully integrated model. Every appliance is produced through the group’s own in-house laboratory rather than outsourced to a third-party provider. That means adjustments, repairs and refinements can often be completed faster, while maintaining greater oversight of quality and fit.

The practice also incorporates modern digital technologies including CAD/CAM manufacturing, dental milling and industrial-grade 3D printing. However, Mr Dimitriou believes technology should complement experience rather than replace it.

“The best outcomes come from combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. Knowing when to use each approach is just as important as having access to the technology itself,” he says.

Restoring confidence

For Mr Dimitriou, the greatest reward comes from seeing the impact treatment can have on a patient’s everyday life.

“The moments that stay with me are when patients tell us they’ve eaten something they haven’t been able to enjoy in years, or when they say they’ve started smiling again in photographs,” he says.

“Sometimes it seems like a small thing, but those moments can have a profound impact on a person’s confidence and wellbeing.”

Looking ahead, Halcyon Denture Care plans to continue expanding its presence across Sydney while maintaining its focus on personalised care and community connection.

For us, the mission remains simple.

“People deserve to be cared for properly, with honesty, quality and respect. That’s what we stand for,” he says.

“If you or a family member needs denture care, whether it’s a new denture, a repair, a reline or simply advice on your options, you’re welcome to call me personally,” Mr Dimitriou says.

“I speak Greek, I take the time to listen, and I’ll make sure you understand exactly what your situation is and what your options are before any decision is made. Call me in Greek anytime.”
