Con Christopoulos to open first Greek restaurant in Melbourne

·

A new Greek restaurant will open in Melbourne, Victoria this week by restaurateur Con Christopoulos, The Age has reported.

Kafeneion will operate as a winter pop up serving slow-cooked dishes known as ladera (cooked in olive oil).

Christopoulos, who runs the popular venues Degraves Espresso, The European and Siglo, is opening his first Greek restaurant after visiting Greece three times since COVID-19 pandemic travel bans were lifted.

“You live a little truer there,” he told The Age.

Kafeneion will be run by Christopoulos and his venue partner, Stavros Konis, who operates Salona restaurant in Richmond.

Menu items will include small dishes like cured bonito, steamed beets with leaves and hand-cut chips cooked in olive oil, while larger dishes will include olive-oil braised peas and artichokes, and pork with leek and lemon.

Christopoulos is also looking for a larger site so Kafeneion can put down permanent roots sometime in spring.
