Neda Gorge in Greece declared a protected landscape

·

Greece’s Environment Ministry has announced that the Gorge of Neda, a sacred natural landscape in southwestern Peloponnese, will be declared a protected landscape and natural formation.

Deputy Minister Giorgos Amyras will sign a ministerial decision setting out the terms of protection, including for a section of the gorge, the Stomio cave and the Neda River falls.

“Neda Gorge is an exquisitely beautiful but also fragile natural ecosystem in rural Peloponnese. It should have been placed under protection long ago,” Amyras said.

“We have begun to environmentally restore areas that affect the gorge’s geomorphology, clearing away garbage and putting our focus on the sustainable management of the ecosystem.”

Neda River, which crosses through the gorge, is 31km long and flows into the Gulf of Kyparissia.

The Valley of Neda was often mentioned in ancient Greek methodology and is the only river in Greece with a feminine name.
