Greece condemns map by Turkish officials questioning its sovereignty

·

Greek diplomatic sources have condemned a public post by Turkish officials showing a map which depicts Greek territory as Turkish, Ekathimerini reports.

According to the Greek newspaper, the Greek sources said the map was an “aggressive and provocative action” that is “part of an escalation of the extreme Turkish rhetoric that we are witnessing on a daily basis.”

Greece expects the immediate and public condemnation of this unacceptable action, which questions Greece’s territorial integrity, the same sources underlined.

The images were made public during the visit of Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli, a coalition partner of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to the headquarters of the ultranationalist Grey Wolves organisation.

During the visit, Behceli was photographed next to a map showing half the Aegean Sea and Crete under Turkish control.

These photos come after Turkey has ramped up its questioning of Greece’s sovereignty over some of the Greek islands in recent weeks.

Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, vowed last month to defend Greece’s sovereignty in the face of Turkey’s mounting revisionism.
