Stefanos Tsitsipas left in awe over strong Greek support in ATP Cup

·

After a disappointing loss to Denis Shapovalov at the ATP Cup on Friday, Stefanos Tsitsipas was eager to score the first victory of the season against Alexander Zverev.

Tsitsipas managed to produce another fine performance to celebrate a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Zverev, with hopes of staying in the Cup coming down to the doubles match. His desire to pursue to the final eight was sadly not met with results, as Greece lost 6-3, 3-6, 15-17 against Germany in the doubles match.

Stefanos praised his Greek fans, expressing his gratitude for the strong support and for making Australia feel like at home. “The plan was to stay in the match as long as possible; I had to give my everything to beat Zverev and secure the point for Greece.

I’m very proud of myself; I worked hard to earn this win, finding solutions and pace, with a clear plan of what to do on the court. Our Greece fans helped a lot; they gave me a lot of energy and motivation, coming to watch some quality tennis and support us.”

“You can consider the crowd as my family; I’m proud to be Greek. The summer in Australia is always exciting and I like the people here and the way they take tennis. I feel the connection with the country and it is like playing back home with so many Greek fans out there.”
