St George’s Mens suffered a frustrating 87–76 defeat to the Newcastle Falcons on Saturday, June 13 after surrendering an 18-point halftime lead in a game that showcased both the potential and inexperience of the young Saints squad.
Facing a Newcastle side featuring several former NBL1 players, St George entered the contest determined to reverse recent results and made an immediate statement. The Saints matched the Falcons’ physicality from the outset, with Yianni Trikillis and Loukas Triantis orchestrating the offence while Ross Aliferis and Riley Brown led the defensive effort.
Their intensity translated onto the scoreboard, as St George controlled much of the first half to take a commanding 48–32 lead into the main break.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically after halftime. Newcastle’s experience and depth began to take its toll, with the home side increasing the physical pressure and gradually chipping away at the deficit. While St George’s starting unit continued to compete strongly, the Falcons’ deeper rotation proved decisive as they outscored the Saints in the second half to secure an 87–76 victory.
Despite the loss, several Saints produced standout performances.
Yianni Trikillis delivered an outstanding offensive display with 34 points, six rebounds, one steal and one assist. Loukas Triantis added 15 points, four rebounds, one steal and eight assists, while Ross Aliferis contributed seven points, six rebounds, one assist and one block.

St George coach George Aliferis was left disappointed but proud of his team’s effort.
“I’m bitterly disappointed for the players because they executed our game plan exceptionally well for the first half,” Aliferis said.
“Newcastle’s experience and depth were the difference. Once the game became more physical, we struggled to maintain the intensity we had shown early. We simply didn’t have the rotations available to sustain that level for 40 minutes.”
Aliferis also pointed to the foul count as a significant factor in the result.
“We had 27 fouls called against us, which made the challenge even greater by giving away too many possessions. Despite that, I thought the players showed tremendous character and competed hard until the final siren,” he said.
The Saints will now turn their attention to another difficult road assignment when they travel to face the fourth-placed Central Coast Waves this Saturday. The Waves boast a highly regarded American import and will provide another stern test for the developing St George squad.
In more positive news for the club, St George’s Youth League Women recorded an impressive 65–57 away victory over the Penrith Panthers.
The Saints matched Penrith’s physical style from the opening tip and gradually gained control through disciplined defence and patient offensive execution. Their composure in key moments allowed them to secure an important road win and continue their strong season.
The result further highlights the growth and development of St George Basketball’s women’s program, which continues to produce competitive performances across the Youth League competition.
