UK bolsters Cyprus bases with Stormer air defence system deployment

·

British forces have deployed Stormer air defence vehicles to Cyprus after UK forces intercepted 14 drones in a single engagement, the highest such count recorded by British troops in the region.

The UK defence ministry confirmed they deployed the vehicles to improve reinforcement of Cyprus’ airspace with the system being designed to counter fast, low-flying threats.

The Starstreak missile travels at speeds exceeding 3700km/hr and uses laser guidance. It is designed to engage such targets with minimal reaction time, including in environments affected by electronic interference.

This deployment contributes the British military bases around Cyprus and comes after an Iranian missile reportedly heading for British bases in Cyprus was intercepted over northern Lebanon.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that Cyprus’ security is “fundamental” to the UK. He clarified that the British bases on Cyprus will not be used in any offensive military operation in the Middle East.
