Turkey declares Cyprus air notice ‘null and void’ amid military tensions

·

Turkey has rejected a notice to airmen (NOTAM) issued by Cyprus over potential military activity, declaring it “null and void” amid rising tensions.

Defence Ministry spokesman Zeki Akturk said the advisory concerning operations off the Karpas peninsula created “jurisdictional confusion,” adding that authorities in the Turkish-occupied north had issued a counter-NOTAM cancelling it.

A NOTAM is an official notice providing essential information for flight operations.

Akturk also accused the Cypriot government of increasing militarisation, claiming it had “made Cyprus a target” by allowing foreign military presence, and said Turkey would continue acting as a guarantor power to ensure security on the island.

The original notice had warned of “possible military operations” in the area and urged pilots to exercise caution and remain in contact with Cypriot air traffic controllers.
