Iranian missile intercepted over Lebanon ‘likely targeting British bases in Cyprus’

·

An Iranian missile intercepted over northern Lebanon on Tuesday, March 24, was likely targeting British bases in Cyprus, according to US military assessments and Israeli and Lebanese sources.

“The direction may have been Cyprus,” Israeli sources informed Channel 12. US military estimates also consider that the missile could have also been targeting a location linked to the recent expulsion of the Iranian ambassador from Lebanon.

The intercepted missile disintegrated mid-air, left debris across towns north of Beirut and caused minor injuries. Lebanese military sources reported that commando units were dispatched upon the interception to reinforce security at the US embassy in Beirut.

Lebanese media cited security sources which suggested the missile either malfunctioned or was shot down from a foreign warship in the eastern Mediterranean.

Israeli army officials are examining the information, with the intended target yet to be confirmed beyond initial US assessments.
