A cross-party delegation of Greek Members of Parliament is set to visit Sydney this week, marking a significant moment of engagement between Greece’s political leadership and the Greek Australian community.
The visit comes at a time of heightened interest in Greece–Australia relations, following the recent postponement of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ anticipated trip to Australia, which had been expected to further strengthen bilateral and diaspora ties. It also coincides with celebrations for Greek Independence Day on March 25, adding symbolic weight to the delegation’s presence.
The delegation, representing a broad spectrum of Greece’s political landscape, includes Maximos Charakopoulos, Secretary of the Parliamentary Group of New Democracy; Filippos Fortomas, New Democracy MP and Chair of the Hellenic Parliament’s Special Permanent Committee on Greeks Abroad; Stavros Michailidis of PASOK; and Konstantinos Barkas of SYRIZA.

Their presence in Australia underscores a renewed focus on strengthening ties with the Greek diaspora, particularly at a time when issues such as representation, investment, and cultural continuity remain central to bilateral relations.
The inclusion of MPs from across party lines signals a unified approach from Greece towards diaspora engagement, with the delegation expected to connect with community stakeholders and gain firsthand insight into the priorities and challenges facing Greek Australians.
Mr Fortomas’ participation is particularly notable in his capacity as Chair of the parliamentary committee responsible for diaspora affairs, highlighting the importance Athens is placing on its global Hellenic network.
The visit is being facilitated by the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney and reflects ongoing efforts to deepen institutional links between Greece and one of its most prominent diaspora communities.
