Matt Damon stars as Odysseus in new trailer for The Odyssey

·

A new trailer for The Odyssey has offered audiences their most detailed look yet at Matt Damon as Odysseus, the legendary King of Ithaca, in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, according to bbc.com.

The film marks Nolan’s first project since the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer and follows Odysseus on his dangerous journey home after the Trojan War. The cast includes Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus and Robert Pattinson as Antinous, one of Penelope’s suitors.

The trailer introduces several mythological figures, including Charlize Theron as the nymph Calypso and the cyclops Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon. Viewers also see scenes of battles at sea and flashbacks to the Trojan War, originally depicted in Homer’s Iliad.

“Help me go home,” Odysseus pleads in one scene, while Penelope later declares: “Ithaca’s king is coming back.” Telemachus insists: “My dad is coming home,” as Ithaca appears to have fallen into disorder during Odysseus’ long absence. The trailer closes with Odysseus stating: “No-one can stand between me and home. Not even the Gods.”

Shot entirely with IMAX cameras and reportedly made on a $250 million budget, the film is expected to be Nolan’s most expensive production to date. “The Odyssey” will be released on July 17 alongside Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
