Matthew Aiden Kaissis granted bail over alleged attack on brother

·

Matthew Aiden Kaissis has been granted bail after a Brisbane court was shown confronting CCTV footage allegedly capturing the moment his younger brother was struck by a ute and pinned against a concrete wall at a Wynnum unit complex.

The 29-year-old appeared via video link in Cleveland Magistrates Court facing charges including attempted murder and dangerous operation of a vehicle in circumstances of aggravation.

The court heard Kaissis attended his grandmother’s Chestnut Street property on Sunday after receiving a message from his mother stating belongings allegedly taken were “in my car at grandma’s” and could be collected.

Defence lawyer Andrew Owens said Kaissis went to retrieve the items with another brother, Luke, and did not know his younger brother Zac would be present.

Prosecutors allege Kaissis drove at Zac multiple times in the carpark before returning at speed and ramming him into a concrete pylon. Graphic CCTV footage shown in court prompted family members in the gallery to weep.

Zac remains in intensive care with catastrophic brain and spinal injuries, including a brain haemorrhage, skull fractures and spinal fractures. Prosecutors told the court he is currently unable to assist police.

The defence argued the incident stemmed from escalating family tensions, alleged prior threats and panic, with intent remaining in dispute.

The court also heard allegations Zac was affiliated with the Bandidos outlaw motorcycle gang and had allegedly possessed a loaded shotgun the day before the incident.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta granted bail under strict conditions, including GPS ankle monitoring, a 700-metre exclusion zone around the Wynnum property, no contact with his brother and weekly police reporting.

No pleas have been entered. The matter will return to court in June for a committal mention.
