On 11 February 2026, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, presided over by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, unanimously canonised two Athonite monks, formally adding them to the roll of saints of the Orthodox Church.
Hieromonk Tikhon, a Russian-born ascetic who lived a life of prayer and strict devotion on Mount Athos, became widely known as a spiritual father – most notably to Saint Paisios of Mount Athos. Renowned for his humility and pastoral guidance, he spent his final days in seclusion and prayer.
Also recognised was Monk George, known as Hadji-Georgis, a Cappadocian-born ascetic who later became a monk at the Monastery of Gregoriou on Mount Athos. Remembered for his strict fasting, spiritual leadership and support of Christians under hardship, his reputation for holiness spread widely among the Athonite brotherhood.
The decision formally acknowledges the enduring spiritual influence of both elders within Orthodox tradition.
