Sarafina Marmoris speaks out against misogyny in SA’s Country Fire Service

·

Sarafina Marmoris, a volunteer firefighter, joined the Country Fire Service (CFS) midway through 2019 in the hopes of helping protect her community in the Adelaide Hills.

During her tenure with the CFS, the 25-year-old female volunteer firefighter told The Advertiser she encountered a “toxic boys club” mentality, which included being informed she was “inappropriately clothed” while wearing a tank top.

Ms Marmoris claimed she also felt increasingly marginalised after putting herself up for training advancements and being repeatedly turned down.

Ms Marmoris added that she feels let down by the CFS community, which she believes did not take her complaints about sexism seriously.

In response to Ms Marmoris’ claims, a CFS spokeswoman defended the organisation by stating that the CFS engages with its members to “proactively drive inclusiveness” and “embrace diverse cultures, ages and genders.”
