On October 26, 2023, Thessaloniki honoured their Patron Saint, St Dimitrios, alongside commemorating the 111th anniversary of the liberation of the region from 482 years of Turkish slavery.

On Thursday morning at the Holy Pilgrimage Church of St Dimitrios, Metropolitan Barnabas of Neapolis and Stavroupolis, presided over a hierarchical divine liturgy held in honour of St Dimitrios.

Hundreds of worshippers gathered early in the morning to honour and venerate the saint who has safeguarded Thessaloniki, and the Balkans, for centuries.

Following the Divine Liturgy, a Doxology commemorating the 111th anniversary of Thessaloniki’s liberation from the Ottomans was held.

Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the President of the Hellenic Republic, was present, along with members of the local military, political, and autonomous authorities.
