Sam Konstas blasts statement century for Australia A in India

·

Sam Konstas underlined his Test credentials with a blistering century for Australia A against India A in Lucknow.

The 19-year-old was told to “go hard” and delivered, smashing 109 from 144 balls in the first session, including three sixes and 10 fours.

He was eventually dismissed by Harsh Dubey but not before punishing an attack led by Prasidh Krishna, the same bowler who dismissed him in his last Test innings at the SCG.

Konstas began his knock with an attempted reverse scoop in the opening over, continuing a bold approach that recently saw him belt 109 for NSW Country against an all-Sheffield Shield attack earlier this month.

Australia A coach and former Test captain Tim Paine said he had “no doubt” Konstas would become a “star” despite some inconsistency.

“Clearly in Australia we know he’s got a lot of talent,” Paine said.

“At times he’s going to be super aggressive. Other times he’ll trust his defence. We’ll back him in this series to play it as he sees it. He’s exciting — you don’t know what you’re going to get sometimes, but that’s a great part of watching him.”

NSW coach Greg Shipperd praised the teenager’s recent development, noting improvements to his footwork and “first class” preparation.

Konstas’ century came as Australia A players push their case for selection ahead of the Ashes, which begins on November 21 in Perth.
