Australia advance to World Cup knockout stage after goalless draw

·

The Socceroos have booked their place in the World Cup Round of 32 after playing out a goalless draw with Paraguay to finish second in Group D.

While the match lacked quality and clear-cut chances, Australia achieved exactly what it needed, securing the point required to progress to the knockout stages of the tournament.

Paraguay rarely threatened throughout the contest, with the Socceroos largely in control despite failing to find a breakthrough in front of goal. It proved to be a professional rather than spectacular performance, as Australia comfortably negotiated the final hurdle of the group stage.

The result means the Socceroos will now face the runners-up from Group G in the Round of 32.

Their opponents will be confirmed following the final Group G fixtures on Saturday, with Egypt, Iran, Belgium and New Zealand all still in contention. Iran currently occupies second place in the group but must face leaders Egypt in its final match.

Although the encounter with Paraguay was far from a classic, the Socceroos accomplished their primary objective of reaching the knockout rounds, keeping their hopes of a deep tournament run alive.
