Following its successful launch last Friday as part of the Cyprus Community of NSW’s Cyprus EU Presidency Cultural Programme, the exhibition Cyprus Dreaming: A Dialogue with Indigenous Dreaming continues tonight with a special public lecture at The Cyprus Club, Lakemba.
The exhibition has already attracted strong interest for its ambitious and thoughtful exploration of mythology, memory, storytelling and cultural identity. Bringing together Cypriot, Hellenic and Indigenous Australian themes, Cyprus Dreaming invites visitors to consider how ancient stories continue to shape communities, preserve heritage and connect people across generations.
Tonight’s lecture will be delivered by Dr Vassilis Adrahtas, Convenor of Greek Studies at the University of New South Wales, whose work spans religion, culture, philosophy, identity and the enduring importance of tradition in contemporary society.
Dr Adrahtas will examine the role of mythology and memory in the Cypriot and Hellenic world, and how these ideas can be placed in respectful conversation with Australia’s Indigenous Dreaming traditions. The lecture will explore how storytelling is not simply a record of the past, but a living force that helps communities understand place, belonging, ancestry and responsibility.
This is a rare and sophisticated cultural event — one that brings scholarship, art, heritage and community together in a way that has never before been presented by the Cyprus Community of NSW. It offers audiences a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage with two ancient traditions of memory and meaning, presented through the lens of contemporary Australia.
The event is designed for all ages. Whether visitors are interested in history, art, philosophy, Indigenous culture, Cypriot heritage, education or simply a memorable night of conversation, the exhibition and lecture offer something genuinely meaningful for everyone.
Members of the public are warmly invited to attend the lecture and remain afterwards to share a meal with the hosts, exhibitors and members of the Cyprus Community.
