Greek Australian referees win big at Football Victoria’s awards night

Victorian referees celebrated the 2023 season on Thursday night at the Football Victoria Referee Awards.

A packed-out crowed attended the night, including referees of all experience levels who came from across metro Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Among the winners were at least six Australians of Greek heritage. They were:

  • Yianni Zisis, Referee of the Year.
  • Astro Sakalis, NPL Assistant Referee of the Year (second year in a row).
  • Daphne Gounaris, NPLW Assistant Referee of the Year.
  • Tina Zafiropoulos, Women’s Futsal Referee of the Year.
  • Makis Loukeris, Rising Star Award – Men’s.
  • Angelique Katsalas, Rising Star Award – Women’s.
