Bayside Council honours Greek Consulate’s centenary with commemorative tribute

·

Bayside Council recently presented a Certificate of Congratulations to George Skemperis, Consulate General of Greece in Sydney, honouring the Greek consulate’s centenary and the consulate’s service to Greek Australians.

The centenary of the Greek Consulate in Sydney was marked at Rockdale Town Hall, where Bayside Mayor Edward McDougall presented a commemorative certificate recognising 100 years of diplomatic and community ties between Greece and Australia.

The building was illuminated in blue and white, with the Greek flag flying outside to mark the occasion. The consulate traces its origins to May 1926, when Greece’s first Consul General in Sydney, Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos, arrived from Athens.

In an address, Greek Consul General Mr Skemperis acknowledged the long history of Greek migration to Australia predating the consulate’s establishment, and thanked the community and local council for their support.

Councillors Fiona Douskou and Vicki Poulos highlighted the cultural legacy of Greek Australians in Bayside, pointing to strong community ties, local institutions and ongoing cultural exchange, including the sister city relationship with Glyfada.

The centenary forms part of a wider program of cultural and academic events across 2026 organised by Greece’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, celebrating the contribution of Greek communities in Australia.

Mayor McDougall extended congratulations and best wishes for the consulate’s next century.
