Former PM Kevin Rudd to replace Arthur Sinodinos as Australia’s Ambassador to the US

Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will replace Arthur Sinodinos AO as Australia’s new Ambassador to the United States.

Mr Sinodinos, a former Liberal politician, was appointed to the Ambassador role in 2020 and has been an advocate for Australian innovation in the US.

At the completion of Mr Sinodinos’ term, Mr Rudd will be sent to Washington DC to commence his new posting early next year.

Former PM Kevin Rudd to replace Arthur Sinodinos as Australia’s Ambassador to the US.

The announcement was made by current Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Canberra on Tuesday.

Mr Albanese said Mr Rudd was an “outstanding appointment” with extensive experience and connections in the US.

“As someone who has links to the global community in Washington DC, he will be a major asset,” Mr Albanese said.

This announcement comes after months of speculation Mr Rudd would be selected for the senior posting, despite the former prime minister playing down suggestions he was interested.

Brisbane 2032 appoints Brisbane-based design agency to deliver visual brand strategy

A Brisbane-based brand, creative and design agency with global experience in Olympic and Paralympic Games has been appointed to deliver the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Emblems and the supporting visual brand strategy.

The Brisbane office for VMLY&R delivered the winning bid with a consortium of majority Queensland-based agencies, including Landor & Fitch, Kantar Public and First Nations consultancy, BlackCard, ensuring more than 20 local employees will deliver the unique Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Emblems on the global stage.

President of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Andrew Liveris said the Organising Committee was impressed with the experience of VMLY&R and the consortia, having worked on Sydney, London, Rio de Janeiro, Nagano, Salt Lake City, Milano Cortina and Atlanta Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, along with many other mega sport events and brands.

“It is important to us that we engage organisations that understand, and ideally work within, the local market, have demonstrated capability to work on the global stage, and align to the values of Brisbane 2032, the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee,” Mr Liveris said.

“The approach to deliver the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Emblems will include an Athletes of the Future panel, including 20 young athletes from a range of levels of competition with lived experience of disability and different cultural backgrounds.

“Three First Nations student interns will also be recruited through local universities to work with and learn from the brand design team, providing a kick-start career opportunity.

“We are confident that the winning bid embraces our local assets, creates efficiency in line with the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Agenda 2020+5 and New Norm and above all, will deliver showstopping Brisbane 2032 Emblems and visual brand assets, so that we put our best foot forward globally.”

VMLY&R Managing Director Adam Kennedy said they are looking forward to being part of such a critical step forward for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“We are honoured and humbled to be able to play this important role in setting the brand strategy and visual identity for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We know how important this opportunity is to the people of Brisbane, Queensland, and Australia,” he said.

Some of the deliverables required within the contract will include the Brisbane 2032 Visual Brand Strategy, market research on brand values and aspirations, design of branded materials like signage and videography, and most importantly, the official Olympic and Paralympic Emblems.

The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Emblems are the first step in delivering all the elements required to establish the visual representation of the brand, with many subsequent brand assets to be unveiled over the coming decade, including the mascot, licensing products and sport pictograms.

Mr Liveris said people across the community would be given an opportunity to participate in the brand design process, with community consultation, market research and market testing forming key elements of the brand development process.

“We will be coming to members right across our community in various ways throughout this process to get your ideas, and this process will start early next year,” he said.

The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Emblems are expected to be unveiled mid to late 2023, along with our foundational planning pieces being delivered next year including legacy and Games’ planning processes.

Golden Dawn members to remain in prison after appeal rejected by Greek court

The Athens Court of Appeals unanimously ruled against the release of convicted Golden Dawn members Yiannis Lagos and Ilias Kasidiaris on Monday, Ekathimerini has reported.

The five-member court rejected requests submitted by Lagos and Kasidiaris asking for their early release from prison and a suspension of the execution of their sentence.

The judges also rejected a motion by the legal team of Lagos to exempt the prosecutor from the case.

Instead the court accepted the motion by the prosecution that as leading members of the party the two should remain in prison.

The court imposed all court expenses on Lagos, that range from 50 to 250 euros. The motion had been adjudicated with the Appeals Prosecutor Eleni Raikou.

Kasidiaris, Lagos and the rest of the leadership of the now-defunct Golden Dawn party were convicted in October 2020 for multiple crimes, including the 2013 murder of Pavlos Fyssas and for forming a criminal organisation.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry threatens Greece over plans to deliver missiles to Ukraine

Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Monday that a potential delivery of Greece’s S-300 PMU1 missile defence system to Ukraine would be considered a very provocative move.

The Ministry published this threat on their official website on behalf of spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

In the statement, Zakharova said that plans to hand over to Kyiv S-300 and other air defence equipment are provocative and “a blatantly aggressive move against Russia.”

Zakharova also stated the potential transfer of the missile defence system to Ukraine will be a “gross violation” of Russian-Greek intergovernmental agreements on military-technical cooperation and “will inevitably have consequences.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

“There should be no doubt that all military equipment supplied to Kiev will be promptly traced and destroyed by the Russian Armed Forces,” the spokeswoman added in her statement.

“While there is yet time, such dangerous plans should be abandoned. Once again, we are warning the Greek authorities of their responsibility.”

This Russian statement comes as last week Greek Defence Minister Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos admitted that the Greek government was ready to send S-300 air defence systems from Crete to Ukraine if the US “installs Patriot systems in their place.”

Back in September, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the country would not provide Ukraine with S-300 surface-to-air missiles because such support for the war-torn country “should not come at the expense of weakening Greece’s defence system.”

Christmas message by the Cypriot High Commissioner in Australia Antonis Sammoutis

Christmas message by Greece’s Secretary General for Greeks Abroad John Chrysoulakis

Sydney’s Greek community gathered at St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Marrickville on Sunday, December 18 for a small festival featuring Christmas carols and traditional Greek dancing.

Despite the rainy weather on the day, around 100 people gathered at the church hall to enjoy Christmas carols by the St Nicholas children’s choir and the AHC.

Their performances were followed by a number of Greek dances by the St Nicholas Community Dancing Group under instruction from Dimitri and Stavroula Papapetrou.

To end the festival, people mingled amongst themselves and enjoyed a plate of hot food.

“I wanted to thank Mr Papapetrou and Mrs Rennie for their contribution to the festival. All in all, it was a great day and a great way to celebrate the end of year,” The President of the AHC, James Tsolakis, told The Greek Herald.

“We are looking forward to 2023 – a year that promises to be bigger and better.

“It is important that we bring the Greek community together in everything we do, and open our doors to the entire community so that everyone can see the best part of Hellenism.”

Victorian Liberals commit to ‘putting multicultural communities front and centre’

Victoria’s diverse and growing multicultural communities will be put front and centre by the Victorian Liberals and Nationals, John Pesutto MP said in a press release.

Victoria is proudly the centre of multiculturalism within Australia – with Victorians from more than 200 countries, who speak 260 languages and follow 135 different faiths, calling the state home today.

“My parents, like many others, came to Australia from southern Italy in the 1960s and taught me the important values and principles that guide me today,” Mr Pesutto said.

“The Liberal Party proudly put forward many candidates from multicultural backgrounds at the recent election, and are deeply pleased to have elected Trung Luu, the first ever Vietnamese-Australian Liberal Member of Parliament.

“Multicultural communities have and continue to contribute enormously to what makes Victoria great.”

Mr Pesutto will take on the role of Victorian Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs within the Shadow Cabinet team. Mr Luu will be Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs.
