George Tsingos recounts Port Melbourne attack as four teens arrested

·

Melbourne shop owner George Tsingos has described a violent daylight attack in Port Melbourne as “absolutely shocking,” after a gang of masked youths allegedly chased and assaulted a teenager with weapons.

The incident unfolded about 3:15–3:30pm on Monday on Lalor Street, where footage shows a group emerging from a white SUV and attacking a victim, including striking him with a sledgehammer.

Tsingos said one of the victims ran into his Bay Street store seeking help. “After the kerfuffle I went outside and there was a lady in distress ringing triple-0… a young bloke came in saying please help me they’re chasing me hide me,” he said.

“He took off straight away but it was quite brazen.”

Reviewing security footage, he added: “It’s very confronting… when cars stop in the middle of the street and blokes come out with weapons like sledgehammers, it’s pretty full on.

“They’re going hell for leather, just whacking the guy.

“Yet again — youth gangs in Melbourne at their best.”

Police initially found no offenders at the scene, but later arrested four teenagers—aged 14 to 16—after intercepting a suspected stolen SUV in Carnegie.

Weapons including hatchets, a sledgehammer and a steel pole were allegedly recovered.

The youths are now being interviewed by detectives as investigations continue.
