Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has paid tribute to Sir Keir Starmer following his resignation as UK Prime Minister, describing him as a friend and praising his contribution to Britain and the Australia-UK relationship.
“I consider Keir Starmer a friend and I’m thinking of him on what must be a very tough day,” Albanese said.
“Serving in public life is a tremendous privilege, but politics can also be a harsh business.”
The Prime Minister said he was grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Sir Keir on key international issues, including AUKUS, support for Ukraine and measures aimed at protecting children online.
Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles also praised Sir Keir, describing him as “a great friend of Australia” and highlighting his role in strengthening defence and security cooperation between the two countries.
“We’re grateful for the partnership that he has demonstrated across the relationship, particularly on progressing issues like AUKUS and the way in which we’ve worked together in the support of Ukraine,” Marles said.
The resignation comes amid growing pressure on the UK Labour Party following a strong by-election result for leadership contender Andy Burnham and the rising popularity of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.
Burnham has since confirmed he will contest the Labour leadership, thanking Sir Keir for his service and pledging to help guide the party through its next chapter.
“Keir has given huge service to our country and I want to thank him for his leadership and dedication during such a challenging period,” Burnham said.
UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves also paid tribute to the outgoing Prime Minister, thanking him for leading Labour to a landslide victory at the 2024 general election and for helping build a “stronger, more secure Britain.”
A new Labour leader is expected to be chosen before Parliament returns from its summer recess on September 1.
