Panagia Soumela Sydney supports landmark new Treloar refugee photography book

·

The Pontian Society of Sydney ‘Panagia Soumela’ received its copies of the new book Genocide to Regeneration: the photographs of George Devine Treloar (published by Unity in Philia) on Sunday, August 10.

Responding to the call to support the publication of this unique volume of Australian Hellenic interest, the ‘Panagia Soumela’ Society of Sydney bought a number of copies in advance.

Dr Panayiotis Diamadis – one of the co-authors of Genocide to Regeneration alongside Professor David Treloar – delivered the books to newly-elected ‘Panagia Soumela’ Society President, Chris Klazidis.

“I sincerely thank the Committee of ‘Panagia Soumela’ under the leadership of then-President Peter Papoulidis,” Dr Diamadis said.

“They supported Hellenic culture in a very real way while simultaneously honouring their ancestors. They are an example to follow.”

The book by Treloar and Diamadis presents – for the first time – the photographs of Colonel George Devine Treloar, Commissioner for Refugees in Thrace and eastern Macedonia between October 1922 and April 1924.

Beyond his humanitarian work, Treloar left behind an invaluable collection of photographs of the first days of the refugees finding the refugee experience, of the reconstruction process of the survivors of the Hellenic, Armenian and Assyrian Genocides in their refuge in Hellas.

With the support of the Pontian Society of Sydney ‘Panagia Soumela’, other associations and individuals, Treloar and Diamadis are returning the photographs and the stories they tell to their rightful places in the pages of Australian and Hellenic history.

In the near future, similar presentations to associations will take place, for others who supported the publication of Genocide to Regeneration: the photographs of George Devine Treloar in this way.
