Nia Gitsas elected first female President of AHEPA Sydney & NSW

·

AHEPA Sydney & NSW has elected Nia Gitsas as its new President, marking a historic first for the organisation in New South Wales.

Elections were held on February 26, 2026, at the AHEPA Hall in Rockdale, following the resignation of former President Jim Papanagiotou. His departure led to the interim appointment of Nick Katris and the calling of a special vote.

A total of 115 members cast their ballots. Ms Gitsas secured 58 votes, narrowly defeating Mr Katris, who received 56 votes, with one informal vote recorded.

Her election marks the first time a woman has led the NSW chapter of the Australasian Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a milestone widely seen as significant for the long-standing Greek Australian organisation.

Ms Gitsas previously served as Vice President and has been actively involved in AHEPA initiatives and events. She has emceed major anniversary celebrations and cultural tributes, reflecting her longstanding commitment to Hellenic heritage and community engagement.

Affiliated with the University of Sydney, she brings extensive experience in outreach strategy and event leadership, having overseen high-impact community engagement initiatives in her professional capacity.

Speaking after her election, Ms Gitsas told The Greek Herald it was “an honour” to be elected President and it brought her “both pride and a deep sense of responsibility.”

“It reflects the trust of our members and the strength of our shared commitment to Hellenic culture, philanthropy, and community service,” she said.

“Reaching this milestone as the first female president adds an additional layer of meaning – a reminder of how far the organisation has come and how much potential lies ahead.

“Looking forward, my focus is on strengthening engagement, expanding our community presence, fostering unity across our members and restoring the organisation’s reputation. I’m eager to work collaboratively with the Committee of Management as we drive our shared priorities and strengthen the organisation’s future.”

Her election signals a new chapter for AHEPA Sydney & NSW, with members now looking ahead to the organisation’s next phase under her leadership.
