Frankston City Council honours legacy of philanthropist Gina Poulos after her passing

Frankston City Council has formally honoured the life and legacy of Greek Australian philanthropist Gina Poulos, recognising her decades of service to the community following her recent passing.

At a council meeting on Monday, March 16, councillor and Mayor Sue Baker presented “a letter under seal to the family of Gina Poulos,” acknowledging her significant contribution to those in need.

Baker said, “We send our condolences to Gina’s family and thank them very much for coming into the chamber tonight to accept this letter under seal.”

The tribute came just weeks after Poulos, 81, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, February 21, surrounded by her family.

In a Facebook tribute, her husband Peter and children Georgegina, Helen, Anna and Alex said, “There are simply not enough words to express how much we love you. You will live forever in our hearts.”

Poulos was the founder of food charity Theodora’s Cheerful Givers, an organisation dedicated to providing essential care and support to families and individuals facing financial hardship.

Each week, the charity distributes free food hampers and pre-cooked meals to those in need, quietly supporting countless people across the community.

Her impact extended far beyond the charity itself, with many taking to social media to share tributes following news of her passing, reflecting the deep respect and admiration she inspired.

A celebration of life was also held, attended by more than 100 people, giving family, friends and colleagues the opportunity to farewell a woman widely described as selfless and deeply compassionate.

In one tribute, Louise Fisher said, “Gina has no medals or OAMs behind her name, but what she does have is a deep, unwavering commitment to helping the underprivileged.”

“She also has a profound love and respect for our Melbourne Jewish community, who over many years have shown her such generosity and kindness, always stepping in whenever support was needed.”

Reflecting on her lifelong dedication, Poulos’ family said, “Mum was a pillar of our community and lived her life in service to others. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering compassion touched so many lives.”

“In her final days, Mum wanted everyone to know how much she appreciated them and how deeply she valued their contribution to her life and to the purpose she held so close to her heart.”
