The Greek community of New Zealand came together over the weekend to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete with a series of memorial services, cultural events and official gatherings in Wellington.
The commemorations brought together representatives from Greece, Australia and New Zealand to honour the enduring legacy of the Battle of Crete and the strong historical ties forged through shared sacrifice during the Second World War.
Events began on Friday evening with a cocktail reception hosted by the Holy Metropolis of New Zealand at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of New Zealand in Miramar.
His Eminence Metropolitan Myron (Ktistakis) welcomed an official delegation from Greece, including Lieutenant General Konstantinos Bouzos, Chief of Staff of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS); First Lieutenant Eleni Theodorou, Head of the External Affairs Department of the Directorate of Public Relations; and Staff Officer Lamprini Kokkori.

Celebrations continued on Saturday with a Battle of Crete Dinner Dance hosted by the Cretans Association of New Zealand at the Greek Orthodox Community Centre, bringing the community together through traditional music, dance and Cretan culture.
On Sunday, the Cretans Association of New Zealand, the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand, and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Zealand jointly hosted a Memorial Church Service and Doxology at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.
A wreath-laying ceremony followed at the Greek–New Zealand Memorial on Cambridge Terrace, honouring those who fought and lost their lives during the Battle of Crete in 1941.
