Symphony and song unite for 100-year tribute to Mimis Plessas in Sydney

·

Sydney audiences celebrated the legacy of legendary Greek composer Mimis Plessas at a special tribute concert marking the 100th anniversary of his birth at City Recital Hall on Friday, May 8.

Presented by Greek Orthodox Community of NSW and Greek Muses Events, 100 Years Mimis Plessas: A Living Tribute with Dimitris Basis featured a full symphony orchestra alongside traditional Greek instrumentation, celebrating the composer’s enduring impact on Greek music and cinema.

Internationally acclaimed vocalist Dimitris Basis headlined the evening, joined by Australian conductor George Ellis and classically trained flautist and vocalist Maria Yiakoulis.

Plessas, who composed scores for 104 films and countless iconic songs including Pios to xerei and Tosa Kalokeria, was honoured through performances blending symphonic grandeur with traditional Greek sounds.

“Mimis Plessas is a titan of melody whose work transcends borders,” Ellis said. “To conduct a full symphony orchestra in celebration of his 100th year was a profound honour.”

The concert highlighted the enduring cultural connection between Greece and the diaspora, with audiences from across Sydney gathering to celebrate one of Greece’s most influential musical figures.
