Global Cretan diaspora to gather in Hania for 2026 convention

·

The World Council of Cretans is set to host its 2026 World Cretan Convention in Hania, Crete, from July 23 to 26, bringing together members of the global Cretan diaspora for a series of meetings and cultural activities.

The World Council of Cretans convention will form part of a broader “Cretans Abroad Week” in Hania, with delegations expected from across the world, including Australia and New Zealand.

The Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand, a founding member of the council, has confirmed its participation in the convention and associated events.

In the days leading up to the official program, several informal gatherings and visits are planned for attendees, including social events in Hania, visits to historical sites such as the Cretan 5th Division Headquarters and the Commonwealth War Cemetery at Souda Bay, as well as guided walks through the old town.

The convention itself is expected to include an opening event in Platanias, followed by a series of activities coordinated by the World Council, with further details to be confirmed closer to the date.

Organisers say the gathering aims to strengthen connections among Cretans living abroad and maintain cultural ties with Crete, with Hania serving as a focal point for the international community during the week-long program.
