High school and primary students from the Greek Community of Melbourne’s (GCM) Language and Culture Schools made an educational visit to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) on Saturday, April 1.

The students, who were accompanied by their teachers during the visit, were given an experiential lesson about the Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens, Greece thanks to the Temple of Boom creation currently on display at the NGV.

The students talked about the monuments of the Acropolis, toured the Temple of Boom and referred to the characteristics of the Parthenon, its history and its uses over the centuries.

They also spoke about the campaign to return the Parthenon Marbles to Greece from the British Museum in the United Kingdom where they are currently on display.

After this, the group visited the permanent collection of classical antiquities at the NGV. They saw ancient Greek vases and were taught about the characteristics of ancient Greek vase painting.

The younger students, inspired by paintings with religious themes, spoke about Holy Week and Easter with their teachers.
