Pontian community members meet with Consul General of Greece in Sydney

Representatives from the Pontian community of Sydney met with the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Ioannis Mallikourtis, on Friday, November 25.

The President of Pontoxeniteas NSW, Maria Anthony, and President of Panagia Soumela Sydney, Peter Papoulidis, were of the few members that met and discussed many topics with the Consul General.

The Treasurer of Panagia Soumela, Panagiotis Sarlas, and Ponteoxeniteas NSW, Helen Macris, were also present.

Topics of conversation included the future of youth participation within the Greek diaspora, the vision of the Pontian Associations, the challenges they face, and the changing dynamics of the community heading into the future.

During the meeting, Mr Mallikourtis shared his aspirations and goals he would like to achieve over the next few years as Consul General.

Mr Mallikourtis said the Greek language and its continued survival in Australia was on top of his priorities, with a huge emphasis on looking at ways in making the language relevant and attractive for young students.

“We thank the Consul General for his time and we are enthusiastically looking forward to working together on the many programs that were mentioned,” the committee said in a post on Facebook.
