‘It is not okay’: Germany condemns Turkey’s violation of Greek air space

·

Germany has condemned the violation of Greece’s air space and overflights by Turkey’s military aircraft above some Greek islands, Ekathimerini reports.

The statement was made by a German government spokesperson and comes after Tuesday’s meeting between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Brussels.

“The chancellor is of the opinion that, given the current situation, it is necessary for all NATO allies to stand together and refrain from provocations among themselves,” the spokesperson told a regular news conference in Berlin.

“Invading Greek airspace and flying over Greek islands is not okay, it seems counterproductive and against the spirit of the alliance.”

The spokesperson added that Germany is committed to resolving the dispute between Greece and Turkey in private dialogue but at the same time, it “cannot accept the questioning of the sovereignty of member states of the European Union.”

These statements come as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that Turkey will no longer hold high-level talks with Greece.

Turkey and Greece, both NATO allies, have long been at odds over a host of issues such as maritime boundaries, the extent of their continental shelves and airspace, and relations with ethnically split Cyprus.
