Regional Victorian city reaches global milestone by planting 100,000 trees

The regional Victorian city of Shepparton has hit a global milestone by planting the largest number of trees in the world as part of the One Tree Per Child initiative, ABC News reports.

Shepparton residents have planted their 100,000th tree for the initiative and their achievement has been hailed by the host of ABC’s TV show Gardening Australia, Costa Georgiadis.

“I’m blown away by the numbers,” Georgiadis, who visited the city last week, told ABC News. “This shows children that their volunteering matters. They’re doing something for the next generation.”

The global initiative was co-founded by Olivia Newton-John and John Dee, with the aim of encouraging millions of children to plant trees.

The project launched in Shepparton in 2016 and now that they’ve reached their first milestone, they’re not stopping there. The city is planning to plant another 100,000 trees over the next four years.

The Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Kim O’Keeffe, said everyone is “feeling incredibly excited about the difference that’s going to make to our environment.”
