The Battle of Crete commemorations in Sydney concluded on Sunday morning with a memorial service at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church “Garrison” in Millers Point, bringing together Greek and Australian community members to honour those who served in the Second World War.
Hosted by the Cretan Association of Sydney & NSW, the service continued a tradition of remembrance held at the Garrison Church for more than 50 years, originally established by Anzac families.
The ceremony opened with the Greek National Anthem, followed by a welcome from Rev Thomas Elms, setting a reflective tone for the morning.
Readings were delivered by Consul General of Greece in Sydney George Skemperis and President of the Cretan Association Terry Saviolakis, with prayers offered for members of the Armed Forces.
Community leaders and guests attended, including Mark Buttigieg MLC and members of the 2/4th Australian Infantry Battalion Association, reflecting the event’s strong intergenerational and inter-service ties.
The Ode was recited by Peter Tsigounis, before the service concluded with the Australian National Anthem.
