The Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney marked the 200th anniversary of the Exodos of Messolonghi during its fifth Book Club event on May 23, bringing together members and guests to reflect on one of the most significant moments of the Greek War of Independence.
Treasurer Katina Contos and Eleni Kandylas-Mallios presented a historical account of the resistance against the Ottoman Empire, examining the Siege of Messolonghi, its consequences and its lasting place in Greece’s national memory.
Special guests Sam Pashalis and Costas Vertzayias provided additional historical context and insights into the landmark event.
Father Milton spoke about the bravery and honour of the women of Messolonghi and congratulated Contos and Kandylas-Mallios for their well-researched presentation.
Dance Ephor Irene Tsenkas also shared her knowledge of traditional men’s attire and jewellery from the period, before a performance by the organisation’s young men accompanied by the sound of the daouli.
President Liana Vertzayias thanked members and guests for attending and presented flowers to the speakers, prepared by Sophia Sotiropoulos. The commemorative event concluded with refreshments prepared by the committee.
