Renowned Greek vocalist Dimitris Basis has been formally recognised for his exceptional contributions to the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales (GOCNSW) and his tireless philanthropic efforts.
The prestigious Certificate of Appreciation was presented during a special Mother’s Day luncheon held at the NSW Parliament House on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
The accolade was presented by The Hon. Sophie Cotsis MP, Minister for Industrial Relations and Work Health and Safety, in front of a distinguished audience of community leaders and members of the Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney, who organised the event.
While Basis is celebrated globally for his powerhouse vocals and hits like “Psithiroi Kardias,” his impact in Australia extends far beyond the stage. For years, Basis has dedicated significant portions of his Australian tours to supporting the Greek Community’s Home for the Aged in Earlwood.
Unlike standard benefit performances, Basis’ fundraisers for the Home for the Aged are uniquely offered free of charge. By removing performance fees, Basis ensures that 100% of the awareness and funds raised go directly toward the care and comfort of the elderly residents, providing a vital lifeline for the facility.
During the presentation, Minister Ms Cotsis, a well-respected figure and the first female Greek Australian minister in NSW history, praised Basis for his humility and consistent service to the diaspora.
“Dimitris Basis is more than a cultural icon; he is a pillar of our community,” Ms Cotsis said. “His willingness to use his talent to advocate for our elders at the Greek Home for the Aged, without seeking anything in return, embodies the true spirit of filotimo. It is an honour to recognise his heart as much as his voice.”
The recognition comes amidst what is being hailed as Basis’ most successful Australian tour to date. The 2026 circuit has seen sold-out venues across the country, from symphonic collaborations in Perth and the Centenary Mimis Plessas Concert at City Recital Hall to intimate gala events in Sydney.
The tour’s success underscores the deep connection between the artist and the Australian-Greek community, a bond strengthened by Basis’s ongoing commitment to the welfare of those who built the community’s foundations.
