Forty standout women from across the Northern Territory have been named finalists in the 2026 NT News Woman of the Year awards, recognising resilience, leadership and community impact. From those breaking barriers to others who continue to support their communities despite challenges, this year’s nominees reflect a wide range of achievements.
Now in its third year and presented by Charles Darwin University, the awards attracted more than 300 nominations from across Darwin, Arnhem Land and Central Australia. The 2026 edition features 10 categories, including the newly introduced Health Heroes category, covering fields from sport to retail, tourism and hospitality.
Among the finalists are three women of Greek heritage:
Joanna Makrylos
A lifelong member of the Hellenic Athletic Club, Joanna turned her passion for football into coaching, helping young players develop their skills. The 22-year-old car care consultant has worked tirelessly to support her team, even securing funding through the Toyota Good for Footy grant for equipment and uniforms, earning recognition as a committed and inspiring leader.
Gella Catis
Owner of Stomp Shoes since 2012, Gella has built a strong presence in Darwin’s CBD, turning her business into a creative and community hub. Alongside running a Greek dancing school, she is known for her resilience, mentorship and dedication to supporting others.

Kalotina Alexiou
After overcoming personal hardship, Kalotina built a successful career in civil construction before launching Holtz Café and Greek Takeaway in 2023. Now managing two thriving businesses, she is widely regarded as an inspiring example of determination and perseverance.
