Battle of Crete Council honours ANZAC nurses at Melbourne commemorative service

·

The Battle of Crete & Greece Commemorative Council of Victoria was represented by its Chair, Natasha Spanos, at an ANZAC Commemorative Service in Melbourne on Sunday, April 19.

The service, hosted by the Australian Nurses Memorial Centre, was held at the Nurses Memorial at the Fawkner Towers Forecourt and paid tribute to nurses who served across all theatres of war.

The commemoration placed particular emphasis on those who served in Greece and Crete, recognising their contribution and sacrifice during wartime.

The Battle of Greece and the subsequent Battle of Crete in 1941 remain significant chapters in ANZAC history, with Australian and New Zealand forces deployed alongside Allied troops to defend the region against Axis invasion.

Many military nurses served under extremely difficult and dangerous conditions, providing critical care to wounded soldiers during both campaigns.

Commemorative services such as this continue to highlight the often under-recognised role of wartime nurses, while reinforcing the enduring historical ties between Australia and Greece forged through shared sacrifice and service.
