Greece stun Spain to end reigning champions’ EuroBasket run

·

Greece have sensationally knocked out reigning champions Spain from FIBA EuroBasket 2025, sealing top spot in Group C with a thrilling 90-86 victory in Limassol.

Greece started explosively, led by Tyler Dorsey’s hot shooting in a 14-0 first-quarter run, before Giannis Antetokounmpo took charge late to secure the win.

Antetokounmpo finished with 25 points, 14 rebounds and 9 assists, while Dorsey added 22 points, including six three-pointers. Kostas Sloukas also chipped in 12 points and 6 assists.

Despite a spirited fightback, Spain failed to convert key free throws in the final seconds and crashed out at the group stage for the first time since 1977. The defeat also ensured Georgia advanced to the knockout stage, having beaten Spain earlier in the group.

The win is historic: Spain had dominated Greece in recent decades, winning 19 of their last 26 meetings, including several knockout clashes. For Greece, it represents a major psychological boost ahead of the Riga knockout stage.

Head coach Vasileios Spanoulis called the first half “one of the best games that Greece ever played,” while Dorsey praised the team’s mental toughness.

Spain’s coach Sergio Scariolo and veteran Willy Hernangomez admitted disappointment, but stressed their pride in the team’s young core and its bright future.
