Sydney mayors honour victims as Bondi Junction reopens for ‘community reflection day’

·

Six mayors in Sydney came together at Bondi Junction on Wednesday to lay wreaths and pay their respects to the victims of last Saturday’s knife attack.

The mayors included those from Parramatta, Blacktown, Liverpool, Georges River, Hornsby Shire, and Waverly.

Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos shared her thoughts on the stabbing incident at Bondi Junction and sent her condolences to those in the community also affected by the terrorism incident at an Assyrian Orthodox church in Fairfield on Monday, April 16.

“It is terrible having this happen so soon after what happened here,” Mayor Masselos said.

“We are colleagues in arms now and extend our deepest condolences to all involved. It is a shocking event for everyone as Australia, as we know, is a safe place and there is no room for incidents like this.”

According to The Daily Telegraph, Waverly Council met on Tuesday and voted to donate $10,000 to Headspace and an additional $10,000 to Bondi Junction Lifeline to help support the wider community.

“The next few weeks are going to be extremely challenging; we are ready to support our community so people can once again feel safe in Waverley,” Mayor Masselos said.

The Mayor also added that an upgrade will commence for Bondi Junction, following NSW Premier Chris Minns’ proposal to create a memorial for the victims and community. A candlelight ceremony will also be held at Bondi Beach on Sunday, April 21 to honour all the victims.

“Our community is deep in grief, and this is a time to support each other and stand together,” she said.

“This vigil will be an opportunity to reflect and commence healing, bring your candles, bring your friends and family.”

Today, Westfield Bondi Junction will also turn off music and display black ribbons on advertising boards when it reopens for a shopping-free day of reflection, five days after the horrific stabbing rampage that left six dead.
