Eleni Petinos MP pays tribute to The Greek Herald in NSW Parliament

·

Miranda MP Eleni Petinos has formally recognised The Greek Herald in the New South Wales Parliament to mark the newspaper’s 100th anniversary, praising its longstanding contribution to the Greek Australian community and multicultural Australia.

In a Notice of Motion tabled in Parliament, Ms Petinos recognised that The Greek Herald is celebrating 100 years of continuous publication in 2026, describing it as “Australia’s longest-running Greek newspaper.”

The motion also acknowledged the important role the publication has played in “celebrating and preserving Hellenic culture,” while ensuring “the voices and stories of the Greek community are heard across generations.”

Ms Petinos further congratulated Publisher Dimitra Skalkos and the wider Greek Herald team on reaching the milestone, wishing them “continued success.”

“Congratulations on reaching this important milestone,” the motion concluded.

Founded in 1926, The Greek Herald has served generations of Greek Australians through major historical moments, migration waves, cultural milestones and community developments, evolving from a traditional print publication into a modern multimedia news platform while maintaining its strong connection to the Greek diaspora.

Ms Petinos’ parliamentary recognition comes as two other Members of Parliament have also recently paid tribute to The Greek Herald in the NSW Parliament to mark the centenary milestone.

In May, Jo Haylen, Member for Summer Hill, described the publication as “one of Australia’s most enduring and significant community institutions,” while Mark Coure, Member for Oatley, praised the newspaper’s role in documenting Greek Australian history and ensuring community voices continue to be heard in public life.

The recognitions form part of a growing series of tributes celebrating The Greek Herald’s 100-year legacy within Australia’s multicultural media landscape.
